Glastonbury Festival of Contemporary Performing Arts, Glastonbury or Glasto, is one of the largest music and performing arts festival in the world. Apart from the contemporary music, this festival also features dance, theatre, circus and many other arts.
The festival is organized a company named Glastonbury Festivals Ltd. Festival Republic manages the logistics and security of the festival. The many stages and areas are managed by independent groups. Catering and other retails are taken care by individual small entities. Other areas such as health and sanity are supervised by volunteer groups.
The venue of the festival is Worthy Farm near the town of Glastonbury. This, despite being an area often flooded and thereby slippery, attracts people from around the world. With sponsorers like BBC, Channel 4 and other major companies coming into the picture, the conditions have improved substantially. However, the festival has reported some negative incidents attributing it to the crowd being more than the stated capacity (and the tickets sold).
This festival has seen a tremendous growth in the past with bands like R.E.M. and Al Green performing live on the stage. Majority of the proceedings go to charity groups: including used material like clothes, utensils, and much more. For increasing the revenue in future, it has been proposed to reduce the ticket rate by 40% for the year 2008.
If you are planning to attend the festival, then pack your bags with a rain gear and rubber shoes as well as other things that may save you from the unpredictable rains and the muddy, slippery underneath.
