With an intention to introduce the early music to the new generation, a festival was organized in 1997, titled The Barcelona Early Music Festival. This festival presented the songs and compositions from unknown performers in Spain. Though the organizers were a bit feared regarding the losses, the festival ended on a good note.
The Barcelona Festival is promoted and organized by Caixa, which is also the festival’s sponsorer.
While initially it dealt with only the factors of early music performers, the festival slowly started encompassing new, complementary areas such as: family concerts, master classes, and, lectures.
Every year, several groups perform in Festival. It aims at diversification; to expand horizons in the understanding of music, and to develop new audience. One of the person involved in the inception said that several young people who performed in these competitions, and debuted at the Festival, are now pursuing an international career.
Coming back to the question of what the ‘early music’ is, it is the term used to refer to music from the fourteenth century to 1940s. Basically, the context of early music is European classical music, incorporating the important pieces written in the 1700s and 1800s. Others explain that the early music is the music from the Medieval and Renaissance periods.
Whatever be the interests of people attending the Festival, the statistics show an annual growth of 3-fold increase in the number of participants; which obviously is a good sign for the Festival Organizers.
